UN numbers

The UN number or substance identification number is a 4-digit number associated with a particular hazardous substance. This number was created by the United Nations(United Nations, hence the UN number) and is intended to identify the dangerous substance during transport. It is laid down in the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods.

The UN number is internationally recognized and is a requirement in most countries for the transportation of dangerous goods. The UN number must be clearly visible on the packaging so that it is clear from the outside what type of hazardous material is involved.
