Considerations for outsourcing caravan transport
Transporting your caravan is often quite an operation. And one you probably won't need too often. For example, when buying or selling a caravan in another country, a good transporter can be a huge help. Good preparation is half the battle here. Furthermore, make sure you cover any risks. Finally, choose a transport company with a lot of experience and expertise in caravan transport. Price is of course always a factor, but it is important not to be guided purely by price when dealing with a valuable asset such as a caravan. Do you want your mobile home moved? Specialized companies can also perform this for you. In this article we explain more.
Transport preparation
Good preparation is half the battle. Make sure the task is as simple as possible and the caravan is completely ready to go. So don't leave stuff in the caravan and make sure everything loose is fastened. Make a good checklist to ensure the move goes well and nothing is lost. Inform the driver of any special features of the caravan or trailer.
Insurance
Cover any risks. Make sure the transporter uses the AVC terms and conditions or similar to your transport. In most cases, this entitles you to compensation of €3.40 per kilo in the event of damage to the caravan. With a valuable caravan, it may be wise to insure for any higher damage.
Transport company
Choose a specialist in caravan transport. Especially when it is a valuable and large operation, we recommend choosing a specialist transport company. A company that knows what it is all about and takes the necessary things off your hands is worth it. A good experience with a caravan transport company is worth a lot, since you may want to transport the caravan more often, for example periodically to the storage or when you move regularly. Therefore, always ask if a company has experience in transporting a caravan.
Permits
Pay attention to permits and insurance. The transport of a caravan or mobile home will in most cases require a permit. When the caravan is transported on a trailer or semi-trailer and the load capacity exceeds 500 kg, a so-called Euro Permit will be required. When transporting outside the EU, additional papers will be required. It is also useful to check that the carrier is properly insured with a transport liability insurance. In our company guide you can clearly see per company which permits are present and which assignments a company may or may not perform.
License plate
If you move to the Netherlands and take your trailer or caravan with you, you may temporarily drive in the Netherlands with a foreign license plate. However, this only applies for a limited period, usually a maximum of 12 months. After this period, you must apply to the National Road Administration (RDW) for a Dutch registration number for your trailer or caravan.
Applying for a Dutch license plate for your trailer or caravan can be done through an authorized company or through the RDW itself. To do this, you must provide the necessary documents and data, including the foreign registration certificate, your identity document, an inspection report and any other required documents.
It is important to know that it is not allowed to drive on public roads with your trailer or caravan without a Dutch license plate after the temporary period with the foreign license plate. This can lead to fines and other penalties. So it is wise to apply for a Dutch registration for your trailer or caravan in time to avoid getting into trouble with the authorities.
Contract
Put agreements on paper. You will discuss with the transporter general wishes about the transport, such as delivery times and loading and unloading place and the price for the services. In practice, more specific wishes will also be useful to discuss, such as whether or not to provide additional services such as leveling the caravan. Or perhaps items need to be disassembled and reassembled. We heartily recommend putting such arrangements down well on paper. This includes scenarios in which not everything goes according to plan. Who pays for what? Is there a higher rate if the job goes over time or if the driver is stuck in traffic for a long time?

What does caravan transport cost?
A caravan transport of a moving caravan costs on average between 300 and 1500 euros. Transportation costs for a non-riding caravan are usually a lot higher. Furthermore, the planability of the transport is an important factor. In fact, a driver who is going that way anyway can usually transport the caravan much cheaper.

Considerations for costs of transporting trailer or caravan
To arrive at a good quote, important factors include:
- The type of caravan/chalet: single, double, with extension, etc.
- The dimensions and weight
- Are other goods being transported?
- The method of pickup? Is there a crane and/or tractor available?
- Should the gas/water be shut off and/or connected?
- Has the whole thing been disassembled for transport?
So the exact cost depends on several factors. At Transportscanner, we bring together supply and demand in the transport sector. Let us find the right companies and best price quotes for you by requesting no-obligation quotes for transporting your caravan, chalet or trailer.
Transport companies specializing in caravans, chalets and trailers
Below are some caravan movers from the Transport Scanner business directory. Here we again recommend that you look closely at the company's qualifications and licenses. To facilitate this, a listing of the permits present is included with each company.
Mobile home or chalet transport
Transporting a mobile home or chalet is another story entirely. There are specialty transportation companies that have a lot of experience with this and can help you with everything involved. Read our full article on mobile home transportation for more information.
Trailer transport
We also include the transportation of trailers themselves. These can be either moving trailers that can be towed by a car, or non-riding or new trailers that are transported on a special trailer or truck.
There are a number of companies specializing in the latter type of transportation. Often these are business transports. Think of delivering a batch of boat trailers to a water sports company or a load of folding trailers to a camping business. You can also think about the maintenance or repair of one or more trailers, which cannot be driven independently.
