Tips for transporting a refrigerator or freezer
Moving a refrigerator or freezer is often easy to do yourself, but there are a few points to consider. Below we provide some tips that apply to both a refrigerator and freezer.
Tip 1. Turn off the refrigerator well in advance and allow it to thaw thoroughly. This allows the refrigerant to "lie down." We recommend turning off the refrigerator at least 12 hours in advance. Tip 2. Clean the refrigerator thoroughly. And make sure it is also thoroughly dry. Ice chests often have a drain line. Drain it well and tape the end shut or put the end in a plastic bag.
Tip 3. Secure all loose parts (doors, drawers and trays). Many refrigerators have loose plastic shelves and trays. These are best secured securely with tape, for example. An alternative is to remove the loose parts and transport them separately. With a strap or a rope around the refrigerator, you can make sure that the door can no longer be opened.
Tip 4. Always lift the refrigerator with two (strong) people and preferably use a trolley. A trolley is ideal for transporting a refrigerator. Another type of cart also often helps.
Tip 5. Consider whether to transport the refrigerator standing or lying down. A refrigerator can be transported lying down just fine. However, keep in mind that after transportation, the refrigerator must first stand upright for 12 hours before it can be turned on. This is due to the coolant in the refrigerator. Even if the refrigerator has been transported upright, we recommend waiting at least 2 hours before turning it on. Never transport a refrigerator upside down!
