Motor Transport often happens in case of buying or selling a motorcycle or in case of damage or breakdown. It is also common when moving abroad, taking a motorcycle vacation or for transportation to a motorcycle race.

Motor transport costs

Motorcycle transport within and outside the Netherlands can vary in cost, depending on various factors such as distance, type of motorcycle, chosen transport company and insurance required. Below is an overview of the estimated price range for both domestic and international motorcycle transport.

Motorcycle transport within the Netherlands

The cost of motorcycle transport within the Netherlands usually varies between €100 and €300. This price includes collection and delivery of the motorcycle, fuel costs and any additional insurance. Factors such as the distance between pick-up and delivery location, the type of motorcycle and the transport method (open or closed trailer) can influence the cost.

TIP: A useful tip for saving costs is to find a carrier that can schedule a return trip. This way, the carrier can spread the cost of the trip over multiple assignments, often resulting in a lower price for the motorcycle transport.

International motorcycle transport

For international motorcycle transportation, the cost depends on the destination and the transportation method chosen (road, air or sea transport). In Europe, prices can range from €300 to €1,500, while transportation to other continents is typically between €1,000 and €3,500. International shipping costs are based on factors such as distance, engine type, customs fees, insurance and exchange rate.

Even with international transportation, it can be helpful to find a carrier that can schedule a return trip, which can result in lower transportation costs.

Keep in mind that these prices are only estimates and actual costs may vary based on individual circumstances. It is always advisable to gather quotes from multiple transportation companies to find the best price and service to meet your needs.

Below are some examples of prices for motorcycles previously transported.

Suzuki V-Strom 650A Touring (220 kg) van Zuid-Spanje naar Nederland950

Vervoer BMW R1250GS motorfiets van Leiden naar Berlijn

Yamaha R1 van Amsterdam naar Ten Post110

Return trip

The transportation price depends mainly on the size of the engine, the total weight and the total distance. If an engine with a larger tr ansport can come along, it is usually a lot cheaper than if the carrier has to make a trip just for your motorcycle. If you are flexible regarding the shipping date, this can often save costs. The driver can then transport several motorcycles at once or combine the trip with a return trip back to the Netherlands.

Motorcycle vacation transportation

Many motorcyclists have discovered how beautiful, for example, a motorcycle vacation in Spain can be. Especially for this kind of international motorcycle vacation there are so-called Fly&Bike packages. For a fixed price, your motorcycle will be brought to a hotel abroad. Usually the first and last night in the hotel are also included in the price. On average, depending on the destination and season, you can count on 400 to 800 euros for a return trip for such a package.

Transporting your own motorcycle in a van (VIDEO)

When transporting a motorcycle in a van, there are some important tips to keep in mind to ensure the safety of both the motorcycle and the driver:

  1. Clear enough space: Make sure the van has enough space to transport the engine safely and without damage. If necessary, remove other objects from the van to ensure that the engine is sturdy and stable.
  2. Use a ramp: Using a ramp makes loading and unloading the motorcycle much easier and safer. Make sure the ramp is sturdy and stable before driving the motorcycle into the van.
  3. Secure the motorcycle: Secure the motorcycle securely with straps or lashings to prevent it from sliding or falling over during transport. Attach the straps to both the front and rear of the motorcycle and to sturdy attachment points in the van. Make sure the straps are not too tight to prevent damage to the suspension or other components.
  4. Protection: Use blankets, foam rubber or other protective materials to protect the motorcycle from scratches or damage during transport. Pay particular attention to fragile and protruding parts, such as mirrors and handles.
  5. Check regularly: During transport, check regularly that the motor is still secure and that no shifting or damage has occurred. This helps to identify and address any problems in a timely manner.

Transporting a motorcycle or scooter - points of interest

When transporting a motorcycle or scooter, the following should be in order at a minimum:

  • Permits for motor transport. Professional transportation of a vehicle on a trailer within Europe requires a permit from the NIWO. Within the Netherlands a Euro permit is required, but internationally an addition to the Euro permit will be needed. In most cases a so-called CEMT permit suffice.
  • Insurance. Check that the transportation company has a solid transportation liability insurance policy and that the cargo is properly insured.
  • Packing and protection. Agree with the carrier who will take care of loading and unloading and that the load is well protected. Should it be a very special motorcycle, there are also special companies with enclosed trailers for exclusive vehicles.
  • Agreements on paper. Make sure the arrangements with the carrier are well written down. The car transporter will usually have a contract and terms and conditions that you must sign. We recommend that you deal with an auto transporter that uses the AVC terms and conditions.
