Types of car transport
There are two modes of car transport:
- Through a hiker. This is someone who drives the car from A to B for a customer.
- On a car transporter or trailer. The car is loaded onto a trailer or semi-trailer that is brought to the site.
Option 1 is obviously only possible if the car can still be driven. Option 2 is also possible if the car is no longer working. In addition, a car transporter can also transport several cars at once.

How is the price of car transport determined?

Car transport by means of a Hiker
Simply put, this is hiring a driver to drive the car to the agreed upon destination. Many leasing companies and car rental companies use this. Sometimes they employ some hikers themselves, or they use a transportation company that has a network of hikers. These types of companies often have hikers all over the country so they can quickly send someone everywhere to drive the car away.
Car transport on a car transporter
For transporting cars, there are special trucks made for transporting (passenger) cars, also called car transporters.
A car transporter is a truck that can usually transport several cars at once. Tow trucks are usually not considered car transporters, even though they can transport cars.
One distinction that can be made is open or closed transport. In open transport, the car is in the air on the truck. It is then subject to weather conditions. Usually this is no problem at all, but sometimes closed transport can be chosen. In that case, the car is transported in an enclosed trailer.
International car transport
A lot of cars are transported across the border these days, to and from the Netherlands. In recent years there has been a huge increase in car transport from the Netherlands to foreign countries. This is partly because cars that we no longer want here, such as many diesel cars, are very popular in Eastern Europe.

Does the transport company have the right permits? For the professional transport of a car on a car transporter or trailer within Europe, a permit from the NIWO is required. Within the European Union a Euro permit is required, but internationally an addition to the Euro permit will be needed. In most cases, a so-called CEMT permit will suffice.

Insurance
Is the cargo properly insured? Besides the fact that the carrier itself should be properly insured, the most important thing for you is that the cargo is not at risk. The carrier may take care of this, but this is not always the case. Furthermore, you can additionally insure the cargo (i.e. the car) yourself with goods transport insurance. Especially in the case of a special object or luxury car, this is highly recommended. Discuss this with the carrier and get quotes for transport insurance when necessary.

Contract and transport conditions

Transporting a car yourself - what driver's license?
If you're going to transport a car yourself on a trailer or by driving the car over, you need to take a closer look at what driver's license you need. For car transport on a trailer you will in most cases need at least a BE license.
