Different types of transportation companies
Courier or courier service
A courier is someone who picks up and delivers packages and/or mail. Usually this is done with a van, but sometimes also by car and nowadays increasingly by bicycle (a bicycle courier).
Many large companies such as DHL, PostNL, DPD and FedEx are called courier services. Here the courier is the one who goes by people's homes, picking up or coming to deliver the packages and mail. These types of companies also have trucks that deliver the packages from one distribution center to another. Although these trucks do work for a courier service, they are not couriers since they do not deliver packages to people's homes.
In addition to large parties, there are numerous small courier services. The advantage of a large party is that they have a huge network and reach. You can send a package all over the world. There is often a lot of upfront clarity about how much you pay. Yet there are also great advantages to a smaller local courier. These are often more flexible and can think better about the customer's needs. For example, they can often pick up and deliver a shipment to the customer the same day. Also, such parties are often a little less strict with the exact dimensions. For example, a very large or heavy package can easily be refused by DHL or you have to pay a hefty extra charge.
In practice, you see many business owners working with both a large and a small party. It then depends on the nature of the shipment whether they send it with the large courier company, or with the local courier.
Logistics company or logistics service provider
By logistics we mean the entire management of transportation. That is, not only moving the goods from A to B, but also the entire organization involved. A logistics company is one that can help with this. They ensure that the entire logistics chain runs smoothly.
It deals with how goods arrive, are stored, transported, transshipped so that they reach their final destination in a timely manner. Logistics management includes contacting potential distributors and suppliers to ensure that a shipment can be executed flawlessly. A logistics company can often help with different types of transportation requests.
Transport company with a specialty
Companies in the transportation industry almost always have a specialty. Consider, for example:
- Special and heavy haulers can transport very large and heavy objects. This is also known as exceptional transport.
- Animal transporters can transport animals, such as pets (cats, dogs and horses) or livestock.
- Refrigerated or freezer transporters can transport food products.
- Car transporters get cars from A to B for car dealers, leasing companies or individuals.
- Boat transporters can safely transport your boat or yacht.
- Freight forwarders are sort of contractors of transportation requests. They can arrange any transport, as well as customs documents, through a large network of logistics companies.
- Fulfilment companies arrange both storage and transportation of goods. E-Fulfilment handles the logistics process for online stores.
- Moving companies handle entire moves, both private and business.
Carriers and shippers
Within the transportation world, people often talk about shippers and carriers. Shippers are the principals of transportation. Often this is the supplier of the goods such as the manufacturer of the goods or the wholesaler. It can also be just the consignee. Carriers are the ones who then perform the transportation job. This may go directly through a direct contact between shipper and carrier, or a freight forwarder may act as an intermediary. Two examples:
Example 1: A camping store in Oss orders new stock from the wholesaler based in Barendrecht. The wholesaler in Barendrecht engages Zitat Couriers to deliver the goods. In this case, the wholesaler is the shipper, and Zitat Couriers is the carrier.
Example 2: The same camping store in Oss decides to order 100 tents from a manufacturer in Canada. To do so, it engages Argo Expeditie to arrange transport. Argo Expeditie engages Maersk for the sea transport and Van Raaij logistics for the trip from Rotterdam to Oss. In this case, the camping store is the shipper, Argo Expeditie is the forwarder , and Maersk and van Raaij logistiek are the transporters.
Courier and transportation company costs
Given below are the costs of a courier, truck or other type of over-the-road transportation company. The price that can be charged for a road transport can be calculated in several ways. It can be done on the basis of:
- A mileage rate
- An hourly rate
- A fixed agreed price
An important factor in determining the price, is whether the carrier has to drive a separate trip or can combine it with multiple shipments. It is more advantageous when you have a shipment that can go with a truck or van that had space left in it, than when your shipment requires a separate trip. When multiple shipments are combined, this is called groupage. This means that multiple shipments are combined and contributes to efficiency. When your shipment can be included in an existing trip, a fixed amount is often agreed upon. This amount is usually determined based on the space the cargo takes up in the truck or van.
1. The mileage price
Mileage pricing is the most common way of when groupage is not possible (the trip is driven separately for the shipper). This involves driving for a fixed amount per kilometer with possibly some surcharges. Here it is important to consider the following factors:
- The total number of kilometers is counted. The number of kilometers driven is usually from the time the courier himself drives off until he returns. So that means there are also charges to the loading point, and from the unloading point back. So it pays to choose a courier near you.
- Some couriers instead charge a flat fee for the call-out fee. Instead of the counter starting to run from the moment the carrier drives away, a flat rate is charged.
- Usually the amounts are displayed excluding VAT. So do you need a transporter as an individual? Keep in mind that you will add 21% on top of the price.
- A minimum hourly rate is usually charged. If the price of the mileage charged falls below a certain hourly rate, a standard hourly rate will be charged. This is the case when, for example, the transporter is stuck in traffic jams or has to travel on bad roads. In that case, few miles are driven but many hours are made. The table below shows the most common minimum hourly rate in the last column.
- Pay attention to extra surcharges. There are many different extra surcharges. See below what these may be and what a normal rate for them is.
The table below lists the most common mileage prices, based on a survey by Transportscanner. A standard weekday trip is assumed. If necessary, surcharges are added, which can be found in the table below.
| Afbeelding | Wagen | Laadvermogen | Laadgrootte (L x B x H in cm) | Aantal pallets (ruimte) | Kilometerprijs | Minimum uurtarief |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| | Bestelwagen (Combo) | 500 kg. | 140 x 120 x 100 | 1 | € 0,50 | € 30.00 |
| | Bestelbus (klein) | 725 kg. | 170 x 120 x 115 | 1 | € 0.55 | € 30.00 |
| | Bestelbus (Medium) | 900 kg. | 180 x 120 x 118 | 2 | € 0.58 | € 35.00 |
| | Bestelbus (Groot) | 1025 kg. | 290 x 120 x 145 | 3 | € 0.62 | € 35.00 |
| | Bestelbus (Extra groot) | 1400 kg. | 360 x 120 x 183 | 4 | € 0.70 | € 35.00 |
| | Bakwagen | 800 kg. | 420 x 210 x 200 | 8 | € 0.90 | € 40.00 |
| | Vrachtwagen | 6000 kg. | 720 x 245 x 236 | 16 | € 1.15 | € 50.00 |
Sometimes couriers work with a discount from a certain number of kilometers. For example, above 100 km, 2 cents goes off and above 250 km, two cents comes off again.
Supplements
On top of the kilometer price, there may also be some surcharges. Below is an overview of the most common surcharges. We advise everyone to check carefully in advance which surcharges are and are not added to the price. For example, a courier may have a more expensive mileage rate but not charge a fuel surcharge. In practice, this courier might be cheaper than a courier with a lower mileage rate. When in doubt, always contact the carrier in advance. This will prevent surprises afterwards. The most common surcharges and rates:
| Wat | Toeslag | Omschrijving |
|---|---|---|
2. The hourly rate
Standard for courier services is an amount per kilometer. Instead of an amount per kilometer, an amount per hour can also be charged. An hourly rate for a van is often between €35,- and €45,- depending on the size. For a box truck it is around €60,- and for a truck it is €70,- or higher. Usually it does not differ much in price whether an hourly rate or a rate per kilometer is charged.
3. A fixed agreed price
Here, a price is determined in advance for the entire transport. The advantage of this is that the shipper knows where he stands. To arrive at a trip price, the mileage price is often used as a starting point to arrive at an approximation of what is reasonable.
